Its a tough time to be a goalkeeper, especially if you play for Chelsea. Both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini were hospitalised in the course of last weekend's game against Reading. This frees up a lot of cash if you had Cech in goal and now need a replacement.
The other goalkeeper in the news this week was Tottenham's keeper Paul Robinson, who missed an absolute howler in England's international game against Croatia in the Euro 2008 qualifiers earlier this week. The tabloids were all over him, with headlines like "Misses Robinson" breaking out across the UK papers.
Tottenham have had a bad start to the Premier League season, and Robinson is not amongst the top few keepers. After his horrendous error some players might be keen to drop him from their FF squads, altho he performed admirably for the rest of the England game. Which is perhaps why he is still the fourth most popular keeper at present.
As of October 17, the highest scoring keepers were Friedel (49pts), James (48), Jaaskelainen (41), and Kenny (34) and Howard (34).
Friedel has had the highest total for a while since his freak 21pt game a few weeks ago. Aside from that one game he is middle of the table, and worth a punt if you are a Blackburn fan (or American).
It is interesting that David James is currently second, as like Robinson he also let in a few ridiculous goals in his time as England keeper. At £5.0 he has been a major benefactor of Portsmouths great start to the season, and certainly a good choice.
Indeed, the goal keepers of the Big Four are not returning good value yet. Lehmann, Van der Sar, Reina and Cech are all mid table - tho by the end of the season this will probably have changed. So between now and then they are due to go on some big point-gaining runs... the tricky part is to try and figure out when!
