More Cheap Defenders - Wigan

Alphabetically Wigan may be the rock bottom of the Premiership, but last season they managed 10 clean sheets - equal with Arsenal and bettered only by Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Pompey and Everton. This hasn't helped with the bookies at all; Paddy Power has Wigan ranked 15th favorite at 250:1 to keep the most clean sheets this season.

Of last seasons spotless games, 11 from the 12 came after Steve Bruce was appointed as Manager towards the end of November. Late last season was definately a golden time to have Wigan defenders. Pre-season they have not appreciated in value, so may provide excellent value if they can repeat their late-season tricks again this year. But who to choose?

Here are Wigan's very likely starting defenders:

GK - Kirkland £4.5

RB: Melchiot £4.5
CB: Boyce £4.5
CB: Scharner £5.0
LB: Taylor £4.5 (or Figueroa £4.0, bit of a gamble at this stage).

Of these players, Malchiot is the best choice. Scharner was Wigan's Player Of The Year last season and is a class act. However he "is in no rush" to sign a new contract at Wigan, and has been linked to Villa as a replacement for Olaf Melberg. Taylor's position at Left Back is far more open, and he isn't recommended as a choice since it isn't clear how much gametime he will be getting.
